It started when William J Hug the son of a Swiss immigrant began supplying goods and services to the Navy in Portsmouth.
He promptly found premises at 82 High Street, Gosport to serve the local community and deal with Naval contracts to repair
and service ships' chronometers, clocks and barometers.
The move to the present location, 90 High Street, occurred when Woolworths bought out ‘82’ for their then new store. Later
there were branches in Stoke Road Gosport, West Street Fareham and Ventnor Isle of Wight.
The Gosport business as many people now visualise it was taken over by two of his sons, Denis and Richard, followed by
their sons Brian and Nicholas (Nick).
Brian's elder brother Mike worked briefly in the workshop before leaving to follow his passion for music and formed the pop
group Manfred Mann......now still performing as THE MANFREDS......check their website for details.......he also works with brian
on songwriting and recording projects.
Nick sadly passed away 11th June 2006 and Brian now runs the new business Hug-the-Jeweller Ltd.
His aim is to take a historic much loved local family business into the 21st century for another generation of happy customers.

Hug's look forward to continuing to serve the local community and new on-line customers for the foreseeable future.

with our continual investment in new technology ....we can now scan any item of jewellery ..save the information
and give it to you on a dongle with which we will be able to recast an exact replica of that item should you lose
or damage it .......yes ...provided it did not contain gems no longer available ....it will look the same as the day
it was scanned.....AMAZING BUT TRUE....Insurance companies will love it !!!!!!!
